Sonia Varaschin is MISSING - please help bring her home!

Sonia Varaschin has been missing since last contact with her family on Sunday evening, and the police were called when she didn't show up for work on Monday morning. Please help to spread the word in an effort to find her and bring her home safe.

Sonia Varaschin is described as 5-foot-1 and 125 lbs. She has brown hair with light brown streaks.

Anyone with information about Sonia Varaschin's whereabouts or details of her disappearance is asked to contact Orangeville Police Service at 519-941-2522, extension 2211 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Our thoughts go to her family and friends as well as our prayers for her safe return. Sonia volunteered as a nurse for two years at Summerfest, an integrated summer camp for children 6-15 living with epilepsy for two weeks in July. All the kids loved her! Summerfest is integrated into the activities of Camp Couchiching. Like any sleep over camp, Sonia stayed 24-7 at the camp providing care for these children living with epilepsy. It takes a special person to give up two weeks every year to spend at summer camp helping children with epilepsy.

Please visit FaceBook for more information as to how to help find Sonia and bring her home.

August 14th, 2010 Community BBQ

It was great to see old and new friends of Epilepsy Niagara at this year's Community Appreciation BBQ at Fireman's Park in Niagara Falls.

Epilepsy Niagara would like to extend a thank-you to the band Sex Panther for donating their time to entertain everyone with their music.

Epilepsy Niagara would also like thank Louis Labbe for coming out and cooking for everyone as well as Kristin Welton, our Executive Director and Dawn Giroux, our Support Services Coordinator who made some delicious cookies, tarts and cakes for our bake sale.

Snap Magazine was their to cover the event, please visit their website to see some photos they took.

It was a great event and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year at Fireman's Park.

2nd Annual Rylee Morrison Golf Classic

In honour of Rylee Morrison, age 2, lost in October 2007, Epilepsy Niagara held the 1st Annual Rylee Morrison Golf Tournament on May 9th, 2009.

Held at the Niagara Falls Golf Course, the tournament was a great success, raising over $4,000 in proceeds to benefit child/parent support programs and children's summer camp sponsorship.

The day included 18 holes, a delicious homemade pasta lunch, desserts and a silent auction.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy, one of the oldest conditions known to mankind, is a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, transient seizures caused by a disturbance in the electrical activity of the central nervous system. According to the World Health Organisation, up to 50 million people worldwide, equating to a prevalence of at least 50 per 100,000 of the general population will have epilepsy at any one time.

Characterised by a tendency to recurrent seizures and defined by two or more unprovoked seizures, the clinical manifestations of seizures will vary depending on where in the brain the disturbance first starts and how far it spreads. Transient symptoms can occur, such as loss of consciousness and disturbances of movement, sensation, mood or mental function. While the condition can develop at any age, it is most often diagnosed before the age of 20 and after the age of 60, and can be due to any one of several conditions, including:

  • genetic
  • hippocampal sclerosis
  • congenital disorders
  • cerebrovascular disorders
  • alcohol/drugs and metabolic disorders
  • cerebral infection
  • brain tumours

Electro-encephalograms (EEGs) are used to diagnose epilepsy along with additional tests/techniques, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning can determine the cause. As a result of the wide range of symptoms that can occur, epilepsy is generally classified by seizure type - partial (simple or complex) or generalised - and treatment, which involves regular long-term drug therapy, is commenced once the patient displays more than one seizure.
